Alabama Story at The Theater Project in Union, NJ — August 2026
Maria Torres · Union County Life
A children's book about two rabbits becomes the spark for a story about courage, censorship, and the cost of speaking up.
Alabama Story, by playwright Kenneth Jones, opens at DMK Theater in Union this August, produced by The Theater Project. Union County Life readers have a rare chance to see this civil rights drama performed live at 1980 Morris Avenue, just steps from the heart of Union Township.
What the Play Is About
The play follows an Alabama librarian who finds herself at odds with segregationist policy after a children's book depicting the marriage of a Black rabbit and a white rabbit lands on her shelves. Running alongside that conflict, two childhood friends — a white man and a Black woman — cross paths again as the civil rights movement begins to reshape the American South.
The Theater Project brings this production to Union with support from the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and through the generosity of individual sponsors and donors, including Ms. Stephanie Fein.
