Read →Incorporated in 1794, Springfield is arguably one of the most historically significant towns in New Jersey. It was the site of the Battle of Springfield in 1780, the last major British invasion of New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. During the battle, when American troops ran out of paper wadding for their muskets, Reverend James Caldwell handed out Watts hymnals, shouting the legendary phrase: "Give 'em Watts, boys!"
Today, Springfield is a highly diverse, family-oriented community with a large and active Jewish population. Morris Avenue functions as the main commercial thoroughfare, blending historic buildings with strip malls, while the Route 22 corridor provides heavy retail and automotive commercial ratables. The town is internationally known for Baltusrol Golf Club, a historic, ultra-exclusive country club that has hosted multiple U.S. Opens and PGA Championships.
Springfield stands out because its history and its highways are constantly colliding; you can find a Revolutionary War cannon sitting next to a massive modern intersection. A local would want an outsider to understand that despite the heavy traffic of the highways, the residential neighborhoods tucked behind Morris Avenue are quiet, deeply connected, and highly desirable.
