Read βThe area was originally settled in the 1700s and known as "Turkey" due to the wild turkeys in the region. After a tragic church balcony collapse in 1759 resulted in no serious injuries, the community renamed itself "New Providence" in gratitude for divine intervention. It incorporated as a borough in 1899. A little-known fact is that New Providence was for decades renowned for its massive commercial rose-growing industry, with greenhouses that shaped much of the town's geography.
Today, New Providence attracts affluent families and corporate professionals drawn to its top-tier, highly ranked public school system. The commercial downtown along Springfield Avenue is thriving, featuring a mix of family-owned hardware stores, boutique fitness centers, and popular local eateries, anchored by the heavily trafficked Village Shopping Center. The town is currently known for its aggressive municipal upgrades, including heavily utilized turf fields and a highly active recreation department.
What makes New Providence unique is its balance; it has the prestigious schools of Summit but a much more approachable, slightly less ostentatious community vibe. A local would want an outsider to understand that it is a "bubble" in the best way possible β a safe, tight-knit town where high school sports and community events dominate the social calendar.
