Springfield Plans Second LPR Camera to Strengthen Recycling Center Security

Maria Torres · Union County Life

Springfield will install a second license plate recognition camera at the recycling center for strengthened enforcement and to reduce dumping by out-of-town violators, Administrator John Bussiculo announced during his report at the August 18 meeting of the Springfield Township Committee.

"The first camera has already caught several violators," Bussiculo said. "It's been extremely effective. Adding a second one will give us full coverage of the lot."

Many recent violations have involved non-residents attempting to dispose of commercial or construction materials at the municipal facility. "People think they can sneak in and dump whatever they want," Bussiculo said. "But the cameras do not miss."

DPW Supervisor Robert Boettcher, who also oversees municipal facilities, agreed that expanded monitoring is necessary. "The volume of misuse has gone up," Boettcher said. "The cameras help us enforce the rules and keep the center clean."

The township is reviewing additional security measures, including the possibility of controlling access during off hours by locking the gate. These complementary measures aim to maintain the recycling center's integrity and prevent unauthorized dumping.

The second LPR camera installation will complete the facility's perimeter surveillance coverage and strengthen the township's enforcement capacity against violations.
