Block Party Permits in Westfield, NJ: What Neighbors Need to Know
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Summer weekends in Westfield come alive when neighbors pull lawn chairs into the street, fire up the grill, and spend a few hours together outside. The Town of Westfield has a formal process to make those gatherings possible, and Union County Life has the details every block needs before submitting a request.
A block party, as Westfield defines it, is an outdoor public party hosted by the residents of a residential block as a group. A private party, even one where every neighbor on the block is invited, does not count. The distinction matters because only true block parties qualify for the town's street closure permits.
Parties may be held between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from May 1 through Columbus Day weekend. They are also permitted on federal holidays during that stretch: Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and Columbus Day.
To close a street, residents must complete a Request for Permission to Host Block Party application and submit it to the Town Administrator. The application cannot be filed more than two weeks before the party date.
Along with the application, residents must include a $25.00 deposit by check, made payable to the Town of Westfield. The deposit covers the use of barricades provided by the Department of Public Works. It is returned by mail once the department confirms all barricades have been returned.
Generally, only one block may be closed per party, and each block is limited to one request per year. Requests to close arterial or collector streets may be denied due to traffic volume concerns. The town also recommends including a rain date with the application in case of bad weather or unforeseen changes.
Once a party is approved, all town ordinances still apply. That includes rules on amplified music, leashing dogs, and keeping streets free of markings.
The town makes every effort to approve requests, but certain circumstances, scheduling conflicts, or locations may prevent approval.
