Plainfield Honors Caesar With New Jersey Black Heritage Trail Marker
Maria Torres · Union County Life
At the Drake House Museum in Plainfield, a man named Caesar finally has his name on a marker.
On May 14, 2026, the New Jersey Historical Commission unveiled a New Jersey Black Heritage Trail historical marker at 602 West Front Street, the site where Caesar once lived. His last name is unknown. What is known is that he survived enslavement, gained his freedom, and served in the Revolutionary War at the age of 78.
Union County Life covered the announcement from the official press release issued May 6, 2026. For Plainfield, the ceremony marked more than a dedication. It was, as city leaders and historians described it, a long-overdue act of public recognition.
Caesar and the Story Behind the Marker
"Plainfield is proud to be part of the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail and to honor the life and legacy of Caesar," Mayor Adrian O. Mapp said in a statement. "His story is a powerful reminder that the fight for freedom and justice has always included the sacrifices and contributions of African Americans, even when those contributions were not fully recognized."
Nancy A. Piwowar, president of the Historical Society of Plainfield, said the moment carried deep meaning for those who steward the Drake House. "Every day, I feel his presence in this house and in the history we are entrusted to preserve," Piwowar said. "This marker gives Caesar the public acknowledgment he has long deserved."
About the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail
The marker is part of a statewide initiative administered by the New Jersey Historical Commission. Each site on the trail is selected through a community nomination process, with final approval from the commission. The markers measure 30 by 42 inches, with black lettering on a white background and gold trim, mounted on a seven-foot pole.
