Summit Bans AI Data Centers, Fills Council Vacancy at June 16 Meeting
Summit's Common Council banned AI data centers within city limits at its June 16 meeting, capping a public hearing process that Land Use Manager Augusto Dal'Maso had shepherded through the review period.
The prohibition passed at final consideration alongside a full slate of ordinances the council had been moving through public hearings. Union County Life covers Summit city decisions as part of its ongoing municipal reporting across Union County.
What Else Passed That Night
The council also voted to ban detention facilities within Summit, approved 2026 capital bond ordinances covering general operations, parking, and sewer utility projects, and updated fee schedules for construction permits and police video footage requests subject to OPRA redaction. Drone regulation, 2026 employee salary schedules, and the reopening of the Chestnut Parking Lot for permit parking — pending the sale of the former firehouse property — all passed as well.
Resolutions approved that evening included cost-of-living salary adjustments for city staff, a bid award for the Ashland Road Sidewalk project, and appointments to the Affordable Housing Round IV Task Force.
New Ward 1 Councilmember Named
The council appointed Andrew Smith to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated when Councilmember Pawlowski resigned in May. Smith was not present at the June 16 meeting. He is expected to begin committee assignments before the July 7 meeting, where his public swearing-in is scheduled. ⚑ Verify spelling of "Pawlowski" against official resignation record.
"Film Ready" Ordinance Introduced
At the close of the meeting, the council introduced an ordinance that would bring Summit's rules for film and video productions in line with a model developed by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. A public hearing is set for July 7.
