Colonial Ball at Shady Rest in Scotch Plains, NJ
Shady Rest Country Club · 820 Jerusalem Road, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
Candlelit tables, a fiddle tune, and dancers lining up for a reel. On Saturday, October 24, Scotch Plains steps back in time for a Colonial Ball honoring America's 250th anniversary.
The ball runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at the historic Shady Rest Country Club. Shady Rest is known as the first country club in the nation owned and run by African Americans. The evening is part of Scotch Plains Revolution 250, the township's celebration of the nation's founding. Union County Life readers who love history, or just a good night out, will find plenty to enjoy.
Guests can try traditional colonial dancing, listen to live period music, play games, and sample colonial themed food. Historic figures will mingle with guests throughout the night. Period dress is encouraged but not required.
Tickets are $75 per person, and parking on site is free. All proceeds support three of Scotch Plains' historic landmarks: the Shady Rest Country Club, the Osborn Cannonball House, and the Frazee House. Tickets are sold on Eventbrite through a link on the township's website.
For one evening, neighbors can dance where history happened and help keep these landmarks standing for the next generation. Find more Scotch Plains events, arts coverage, and community news on Union County Life.
