Destroying David Opening Night in Union, NJ

DMK Black Box Theater (UAC) · 1980 Morris Ave. Union, NJ 07083

Michelangelo's David is in danger of collapsing, and it may not survive the night. Is it the centuries old crack in the statue's ankle? The earthquakes near Florence? Or the charming but troubled tour guide with a gift for talking and nothing to lose? On Friday, October 9, Union audiences find out.

American Theater Group opens its new season with the East Coast premiere of "Destroying David" at the DMK Black Box Theater inside the Union Arts Center. Emmy nominee Jason Odell Williams wrote the play and performs it alone on stage, and ATG Producing Artistic Director Charlotte Cohn directs. The show is funny, heartbreaking, and uplifting, and it centers on how art can help people through hard times. Union County Life readers can catch a professional premiere right in town.

Opening night starts at 7 p.m. at the Union Arts Center, 1980 Morris Ave., Union. The run continues through October 18, with shows at 7 p.m. on October 10, 15, 16, and 17, and at 2 p.m. on October 11 and 18. The October 16 show includes a talkback with The Newark Museum of Art.

Tickets are sold on Eventbrite through a link on the township's calendar and at americantheatergroup.org. Free parking is available in Union Arts Center Lot 4, Town Hall Lot 5, and the library lots during shows.

For one night, a single performer and a famous statue can remind an audience why art is worth protecting. Find more Union events, arts coverage, and community news on Union County Life.
