Destroying David Talkback Night in Union, NJ

DMK Black Box Theater (UAC), · 980 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083

A tour guide stands before Michelangelo's David as the famous statue threatens to collapse. Is it the old crack in the ankle, the earthquakes near Florence, or the troubled guide himself? That question drives "Destroying David," a solo play coming to Union this October.

American Theater Group is presenting the play's East Coast premiere to open its new season. Emmy nominee Jason Odell Williams wrote the play and performs it, and ATG Producing Artistic Director Charlotte Cohn directs. The show is funny and moving, and it centers on how art can help people through hard times. Union County Life readers who love live theater can see it right in town.

On Friday, October 16, the 7 p.m. performance will be followed by a talkback with The Newark Museum of Art, where guests can hear art experts discuss the play's themes. The show runs at the DMK Black Box Theater inside the Union Arts Center, 1980 Morris Ave., Union, from October 9 to 18. Performances are at 7 p.m. on October 9, 10, 15, 16, and 17, and at 2 p.m. on October 11 and 18.

Tickets are available at americantheatergroup.org. Free parking is available in Union Arts Center Lot 4, Town Hall Lot 5, and the library lots during shows.

For anyone who has stood in front of a great work of art and felt something shift, this play is a reminder of why those moments matter. Find more Union events, arts coverage, and community news on Union County Life.
