Hanson Park Conservancy's 15th Annual Rubber Ducky Race
Sperry Park, Riverside Drive & North Union Avenue · Cranford, NJ 07016.
Picture more than 1,500 yellow ducks tumbling over the falls while hundreds of neighbors cheer from the riverbank. On Sunday, October 4, that scene returns to Sperry Park for the 15th Annual Rubber Ducky Race in Cranford.
The Hanson Park Conservancy, a nonprofit started by Cranford residents in 2004, has held the race since 2010. This year, the Cranford Chamber of Commerce joins the Conservancy in presenting it. The race usually draws more than 400 people to watch the numbered ducks race over the falls and down the Rahway River to the finish line. Union County Life readers looking for a fun Sunday afternoon in Cranford can catch the splash.
Ducks cost $5 each, or $20 for a flock of five. You can buy them ahead of time at the Cranford Canoe Club at Orange and Springfield avenues, or at Periwinkle's Fine Gifts, 19 N. Union Ave. Ducks will also be sold at Sperry Park on Riverside Drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on race day.
Prizes, donated by local merchants, go to the first 10 ducks across the finish line. After the race, all the ducks are collected and saved for next year. All proceeds support Hanson Park maintenance and educational programs. The race runs from 4 to 5 p.m. at Sperry Park, at the corner of Riverside Drive and North Union Avenue.
