March to Yorktown Day at Frazee House in Scotch Plains, NJ
Frazee House Museum · 1451 Raritan Road
In August 1781, American soldiers marched down what is now Raritan Road, right past the Frazee House, on their way to a battle that would help win the Revolution. On Sunday, October 18, Scotch Plains marks that march with March to Yorktown Day.
The free event runs from noon to 3 p.m. at the Frazee House Museum, 1451 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains. It’s part of the museum’s Four Centuries in a Weekend program and celebrates America’s 250th anniversary. Union County Life shares the details so Scotch Plains families and history lovers can be there.
An opening ceremony at 1 p.m. features the national anthems of the United States and France, followed by welcoming remarks from Andy Calmaras, president of Fanwood-Scotch Plains Frazee House, Inc. From 1 to 3 p.m., costumed interpreters portraying General George Washington and the French General Rochambeau will share stories of the Yorktown campaign and the French and American alliance. NJ Fifes & Drums will play music of the era, and a colonial baking demonstration will show how soldiers made hardtack, a hard biscuit that fed troops on long marches.
The event also honors the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail, about 680 miles of routes the allied armies traveled to Yorktown. The National Park Service manages the trail, and the Washington-Rochambeau Trail Alliance of New Jersey helps preserve and share its story. The event is supported by SPF Rotary and Frazee House, Inc. Admission is free.
The British surrendered at Yorktown on October 19, 1781, and this event lands one day short of that anniversary. Find more Scotch Plains events, arts coverage, and community news on Union County Life.
