New trees now stand along Oakland Road in Springfield, and more than 100 flowering bulbs will soon go into the ground to bloom next spring. They are some of the last touches on Oakland Park, the first new park Springfield has built in more than 30 years, according to Mayor Harris Laufer.

Fencing will go along one property line to keep people from cutting through the landscaped areas, and officials are thinking about hanging flower baskets from the park poles next spring.
The park includes electrical outlets, public wireless internet, and a drainage system built to handle stormwater. Bussiculo said the drainage will be watched closely after the park opens.
