
Boys Golf: Westfield Defends UCIAC Championship on Home Course

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School boys golf team defended its UCIAC Championship crown at Echo Lake Country Club, their home course, on Tuesday.The Blue Devils (313) upended Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 315-323, to win the team title. New Providence (332), Johnson (334) and Summit (335) rounded out the top five.Scotch Plains-Fanwood senior Jake Todaro (75) and Johnson senior Joseph Melchionna (75) each tied for first in regulation with Todaro winning in a playoff to capture individual medalist honors.*The Blue Devils had three golfers round out the top five: sophomore Jack Brouillard (76) finished third, sophomore Chase Simms (77) placed fourth and senior Nick Benson (78) tied with Summit sophomore Ethan Dipetrillo (78) for fifth.Senior Matthew McKenna (81) and sophomore Dingwen Yang (81) finished in a five-way tie for 10th, and freshman Eli Diamant (82) finished in a two-way tie for 15th to contribute to the Blue Devils victory.“I think the team has been getting better and improving all year. This was an honor to be a part of this historical tournament, and we are grateful for the opportunity," said Westfield head coach Ryan Daly. “Ben Barshtak has been a great captain for us this year and he was there today when the team received the trophy. His leadership and experience are something we are leaning on as we continue to move forward and contributed to the win today.”Next up: The NJSIAA North Jersey, Group 4 sectional tournament on Monday, May 4.
