Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life

PLAINFIELD, NJ — Wednesday morning, shortly after 9am, masked ICE agents arrested a man in the heart of downtown Plainfield.Westward traffic was blocked on East Second Street between Watchung and Church Streets, and cars going east struggled to get by as 5 agents walked the man to a car before placing him in its back seat. The subject had been taken from his SUV after being surrounded by at least four cars, most of which had flashing lights. At least one officer's vest was clearly marked “ICE” while at least one other said "federal officer". Five of the 8 agents at the scene wore masks. The operation comes weeks after Mikie Sherrill signed a law banning law enforcement from wearing masks during public interactions. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, called the law unconstitutional and said federal agents would continue wearing masks.
