PLAINFIELD, NJ — On Tuesday, April 28, the Plainfield Board of Education will meet for final passage of its 2026-2027 budget. The meeting will take place at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria of the Charles and Anna Booker Elementary School. At a late March tentative budget meeting, the Plainfield Board of Education voted to pursue a 0% budget increase and a plan that included over 50 layoffs and the elimination of around 90 positions. The district calls the reduction rightsizing, and relates the plan to its diminishing enrollment. On April 14, the BOE voted to move forward with that reduction in force at the April business meeting. On Tuesday, the Board is expected to see an even more detailed plan for the budget before it can vote to approve or reject it.This year, New Jersey requires school boards to hold these public hearings between April 24 and May 7. Local tax levies must be certified by May 19, 2026.
