Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life

PLAINFIELD, NJ — On Tuesday, May 5, a team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) will examine all aspects of the Plainfield Police Department, and they'd like your help with the assessment. As part of this final, on-site evaluation, city employees and members of the public are invited to provide their comments directly to the assessment team via telephone or email. Call (908)753-3051 on Tuesday between 10am and 11am or email aromeo@plainfieldpolicenj.gov, who will forward the comments. Phone comments will be limited to 5 minutes.“Verification by the team that the Plaifnield Police Department meets the Commission's ‘best practice’ standards is part of a voluntary process to achieve accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement processional excellence,” said Plainfield Police Director James Abney.Telephone comments are limited to 5 minutes, and must address the agency's ability to comply with the NJSACOP standards. The standards aren't publicly available as a single, code-like document—instead being distributed to participating agencies—but the Plainfield Police Department has offered Sergeant Anthony Romeo to answer questions at (908)753-3069.Plainfield Police say that anyone who wishes to offer written comments about the PPD's ability to comply with those standards to email the Accreditation Program Director at hdelgado@njsacop.org.“Accreditation results in greater accountability within the agency, reduced risk and liability exposure, stronger defense against civil lawsuits, increased community advocacy, and more confidence in the agency's ability to operate efficiency and respond to community needs,” said Abney.Once achieved, accreditation is valid for a three-year period during which time the agency must submit annual reports attesting to their continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.Learn more about New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police accreditation here.
