RAHWAY, NJ — The Rahway 7th and 8th Grade Academy hosted a dynamic and thought-provoking Black History Month Program on March 4, centered on the theme: “Affluent African American Cities That Vanished.” The program offered a meaningful exploration of historically prosperous Black communities—such as Tulsa’s Greenwood District and others—that were destroyed or declined due to systemic racism, violence, and economic displacement.Students brought this theme to life through an engaging and multifaceted showcase of talent and scholarship. Performances included soulful singing, impactful poetry recitations, and expressive dance pieces that reflected both the triumphs and tragedies of these once-thriving communities. Each presentation demonstrated students’ deep understanding of the historical significance and lasting impact of these lost cities. In addition to performances, students contributed original artwork inspired by the theme, capturing the vibrancy, resilience, and cultural richness of these communities before their decline. A standout feature of the event was a teacher-supported hat display, where creatively designed student-made hats symbolized different aspects of Black history, identity, and perseverance. The program also featured a lively student-run Pop-Up Shop, where young entrepreneurs showcased and sold their own handcrafted products. This initiative not only highlighted creativity but also fostered business acumen and leadership skills among students.Families and community members were invited to further engage with the program through a digital presentation, accessible here: https://www.canva.com/design/DAHBm4Hhi3A/9p7ot38x7njATR7ubLEknw/view“This year’s theme encouraged our students to reflect on lesser-known yet critical parts of American history,” said a Rahway Academy representative. “They honored the legacy of these communities with creativity, respect, and a powerful sense of purpose.”Rahway Academy continues to create meaningful opportunities for students to explore history, celebrate culture, and express themselves through the arts while building knowledge and community awareness.[Don’t miss any TAPinto Rahway news.
