School No. 2 Sensory Night: Designed with Our Students in Mind
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
Linden Public Schools—Sensory Night was sponsored by the LEA, F.A.S.T., School No. 2, and the Special Education Department. The event was planned and organized by Jamie Pierson, Autism Teacher, and Debra Ardry, PSD Teacher. Sensory Night was created to provide students with disabilities, especially those with sensory sensitivities, an opportunity to participate in a community-style event that feels safe, welcoming, and manageable. Many of our families have shared that traditional school or community events can be overwhelming due to noise, crowds, bright lights, and long wait times. This event was intentionally designed with our students’ needs in mind. During Sensory Night, a variety of engaging and thoughtfully designed stations invited students to explore, move, create, and relax at their own pace. From hands on activities and movement-based stations to calming spaces and interactive experiences, there was something for every learner to enjoy. Each area was carefully designed to reduce overstimulation while still encouraging curiosity and fun. Lighting was adjusted, sound levels were monitored, visual supports were provided, and staff were available to assist students with transitions and self regulation as needed. This year, we also welcomed Build-A-Bear, as well as therapy dogs, adding an extra layer of excitement and comfort to the evening. Sensory Night reflects Linden Public Schools’ commitment to creating inclusive, student-centered learning environments where all learners feel valued and supported. By providing an accessible and thoughtfully designed experience, this event aligns with the district’s focus on student wellness, equitable access, and meaningful community engagement. It also supports our mission of empowering all learners while fostering collaboration between families, staff, and the broader school community. [Don’t miss any TAPinto Linden news.
