Boys Lacrosse: New Providence Beats A.L. Johnson, 13-8, in Union County Tournament Quarterfinals

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — The New Providence boys lacrosse team advanced in the quarterfinal round of the Union County Tournament with a 13-8 victory over A.L. Johnson on Monday.The score was 8-7 after three quarters before the Pioneers finished off Johnson with a 5-1 advantage in the fourth quarter.Charles Zarinko scored three goals and passed for three assists for New Providence (9-4), the fourth seed. Zarinko has 16 goals and 18 assists this season.A.J. Whitehead also scored three goals and had one assist in the victory. Declan Troy connected for three goals, as well, in the win.Ryan Knight had two goals and one assist, Bowen Killea had one goal and three assists and Zach Sheen scored a goal for New Providence, which finished with a narrow 38-37 advantage in shots on goal.Drew Gullo was the winning goalie. It was New Providence's second victory over Johnson in its last three games.New Providence will play top-seeded Summit in the UCT semifinals at A.L. Johnson High School on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.The Pioneers are undefeated against Union County opponents this season, but they have not played Summit yet.
