
Boys Track & Field: Westfield Takes 3rd at Union County Championships

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School boys track and field team took third overall at the Union County Championships May 7-8 at Hub Stine Field in Plainfield.The Blue Devils finished with a score of 49. Union Catholic prevailed with 167 points for the program’s sixth straight county title. Elizabeth was runner-up with a score of 51.“We had a lot of contributions from all event areas to place third overall, just two points back of Elizabeth,” said Westfield head coach Christopher Tafelski. “We’re looking to a rematch with them at the State Sectionals next Friday-Saturday.”In the shot put, junior Nicholas Dena won the event in 49-2.50. He was a second-place finisher in the discus throw with a 144-0. Junior Nikos Davlouros (1:56.10) and senior Christian Buonopane (1:56.35) hit big personal bests in the 800 to go third and fourth, respectively.In pole vault, sophomore Toby Bronsteen finished fourth in 11-6, while freshman James Catalano and sophomore Casey Lawlor were eighth and ninth, respectively. Junior Braden Janusz was fourth in the javelin in 139-7.Junior Joshua Calise was seventh in the 800-meter in 2:08.49. The 4x400 meter relay team took second in 3:24.61.Senior Douglas Gee took seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.01. Davlouros finished sixth in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:25.49. Junior Luke Scheiner took 10th in the 400-meter run in 50.85. Sophomore Lincoln Staiger took seventh in the 3200-meter run in 9:41.28.
