Clark's Saint John the Apostle School Students Reflect on ‘What America Means to Me’
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
CLARK, NJ — In a classroom at Saint John the Apostle School, fourth and fifth grade students leaned over their desks, pencils in hand, carefully choosing their words. Their task was simple but meaningful: answer the question, “What does America mean to me?” in 100 words or less as part of America’s Field Trip, a nationwide contest celebrating the upcoming United States 250th Anniversary Celebration. Before writing, students read examples from past submissions and gathered in small groups to brainstorm ideas. Conversations filled the room as they shared thoughts about freedom, opportunity, and community. As they discussed their ideas, students also reflected on what it means to be a good citizen—considering qualities such as kindness, responsibility, respect for others, and service to the community—and how those traits can be recognized in the people around them. With those ideas in mind, students began drafting their responses by hand—an intentional step that strengthened fine motor skills and cursive writing while encouraging thoughtful reflection.Teachers then met with students to conference about their writing, offering guidance and encouragement. Embracing a growth mindset, students revised their work and used their Chromebooks to type polished final drafts for submission. The project reflected the school’s commitment to traditional Catholic values—gratitude, respect, and using one’s gifts to serve others—while also teaching students that perseverance and revision are essential parts of learning.Families partnered with the school by granting permission for their children’s work to be submitted to the national contest, strengthening the connection between home and school.Principal Keara DeMaio reflected on the experience. “Watching our students think deeply about what America means to them was inspiring,” she said. “Through collaboration, reflection, and perseverance, they discovered that their voices matter while also learning what it means to be responsible and compassionate citizens.”Saint John the Apostle School is currently accepting applications for new students. Families interested in learning more about the school’s faith-based academic programs can visit the school website and find application information under the Admissions tab.
