Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Gov. Livingston’s Michael Donahue delivered a dominant performance Saturday afternoon in Berkeley Heights, tossing a four-hit shutout to lead the Highlanders to a 4–0 victory over Jackson Township. The sophomore right-hander showed excellent command throughout, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking one in a complete-game effort. Donahue improved to 3–0 on the season (21.2 IP, 21 K, 2.30 ERA), having worked both as a starter and in relief. His battery-mate, Michael Basile, provided all the offense Donahue would need early. Basile launched a first-inning home run off Jackson Township senior starter Matt Colaneri to give the Highlanders a quick 1–0 lead.Jackson Township — a large Group 4 program following the merger of Jackson Liberty and Jackson Memorial—made the long trip north in search of a signature win over highly ranked Gov. Livingston (No. 4 NJ.com). Led by former Jackson Memorial coach Pat George, who had nearly 90 players try out this season, the Jaguars continue to build cohesion despite early-season struggles. It was apparent to all watching Jackson Twp. go through their pre-game prep that this did not look like a 5-11 team. In the states over the past two decades, several “Shore” teams have made their way up to the HILL with barely .500 records and have given the Highlanders fits. Jackson Twp. would prove to be one of those teams.Pitching dominated early, as Donahue ( 7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 7 K) and Colaneri (5.1 IP,4 H,3 ER,6 K) were locked in a duel through four innings.Jackson threatened in the top of the fifth, putting a pair of runners on with one out via a hit and a walk. Dylan Johnston (2-2) then lined a single to right field, but Gov. Livingston’s Owen Keogh charged the ball and delivered a perfect throw home. Basile applied the tag to cut down the potential tying run—Keogh’s second outfield assist of the week. Donahue escaped the inning by stranding a runner at third. The Highlanders added insurance in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Addison Adornato (1-3, RBI) delivered a clutch two-out RBI single to make it 2–0. Senior Dom Labisi (1-3, 2 RBI) followed with a one-hop drive off the right-field fence for a two-run double, extending the lead to 4–0.Adornato (.370 BA, 20 H,18 RBI) and junior Keough (.471 BA, 24 H, 21 R ,15 SB) both playing their first full season of varsity ball, are having very productive seasons both at the plate and in the field.Head coach Chris Roof sent rookie Donahue back out for the seventh, and the sophomore completed his first career shutout to seal the victory.Gov. Livingston (14–3, 9–1) now enters a busy two-week stretch with potentially eight games remaining before the May 16 state playoff cutoff. The 2-time defending State and Union County champions are expected to earn the top seed in the upcoming Union County Tournament, with seeding set for Monday night. In the state tournament picture, Gov. Livingston currently holds the top spot in the Central Jersey Group II section, with Rumson-Fair Haven close behind. The Highlanders will travel to Watchung Hills (10-3) on Monday for a key match up that could boost their power points if they come away with a win against a strong Group 4 opponent.Senior Aidan Feldman (4–0, 31.1 IP, 28 K, 1.79 ERA) is expected to take the mound for Gov. Livingston. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Warren.
