Fiddler on the Roof Shines as a Cultural Gem at the Cranford Dramatic Club

CRANFORD, NJ - On May 1, the Cranford Dramatic Club held its opening night for Fiddler on the Roof, continuing the theater’s 107th season. Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964, with its original run lasting for over 3,000 performances and receiving nine Tony Awards. The musical takes place in the fictional town of Anatevka, a Jewish enclave in the early 1900s Russian Empire. It details the story of Tevye, the local milkman, (played by Larry Brustofski) and recounts his struggle to maintain cultural tradition in an ever-changing world. His daughters, Tzeitel (Gabrielle Traub), Hodel (Katherine Hope Stelma), and Chava (Nina Randazzo) reject established matchmaker customs and instead attempt to find love in marriage, a choice Tevye struggles to support when asked to give his blessing. Additionally, Tevye and his community are repeatedly oppressed by Russian soldiers who carry out intense, state-sanctioned persecution, hindering their ability to preserve cultural identity.Audience members are treated to an emotionally profound and culturally-rich blend of traditional Broadway storytelling and Eastern European-inspired melodies through Fiddler’s exuberant score, which expertly balances joyous numbers with poignant melancholy. The production features classic songs such as “Tradition” and “If I Were a Rich Man” along with high-energy, show-stopping numbers like “To Life,” wild, hilarious scenes such as in “The Dream,” and heartbreaking ballads such as “Far From the Home I Love.” Also included is Fiddler’s iconic and anxiety-inducing bottle dance, where multiple performers balance wine bottles on their hats while performing intricate movements. This critically lauded and universally loved theatrical phenomenon is reimagined at the CDC to great effect. Brustofski’s charming performance as Tevye effortlessly draws the audience into the story, having listeners fully understand his inner conflict and see the justification behind his decisions regardless of whether they agree with his choices. The hearty, boisterous dance scenes choreographed by director Emma Schwartz, combined with the upbeat, enthusiastic score, puts Anatevka’s rich culture on full display and incites envy in an audience who wishes they were clapping and dancing along themselves. The production breathes life into the universal themes of tradition, family, tolerance, and inequality, showing such sentiments are as pertinent now as they were in 1964 America and 1905 Russia. One concept crucial to Fiddler’s identity is its incredible humor. Certain theatergoers hold the unjustified idea that a classic musical’s comedy must now be outdated or completely nonexistent. CDC’s Fiddler on the Roof instantly breaks this notion, with the audience laughing from the very first number. The comical situations these characters often find themselves in make the show constantly engaging, but simultaneously makes the deep, poignant moments of self-reflection, loss, and tragedy hit significantly harder due to the harsh juxtaposition with past events of abundant joy.Overall, Fiddler on the Roof at the Cranford Dramatic Club is a hilarious, charming, and profound experience that will have you humming at least one tune on your way home. Performances will run through May 17, with 8:00 PM showings on May 8, 15, and 16, and 2:00 PM matinées on May 9 and 10.
