Friday Night at the OLP Fair: New Rides, Old Memories and Not a Drop of Rain to Spoil the Fun
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. — The forecast called for rain. The fair had other plans.Clouds threatened all week, and a few stray drops fell Friday evening at Our Lady of Peace Parish's annual OLP Fair — but nothing was enough to dampen the spirit of one of New Providence's most beloved community traditions. The crowds came anyway, and they came in force.Young families navigated the grounds with strollers in tow. Teens and tweens darted from ride to ride. Grown children walked the fairgrounds alongside their parents, trading stories and smiles from fairs gone by. For one night, it felt less like a church carnival and more like a full reunion of the New Providence community — gathered under one canopy for something everyone could share.Seaside Heights Comes to New ProvidenceThis year's fair debuted a fresh lineup of rides that could have come straight off the Seaside Heights boardwalk. All that was missing were the ocean views and the salt air.The new attractions gave the event an added energy, drawing in first-timers and fair veterans alike. While the boardwalk may be an hour away, Friday night in New Providence had its own shore-town magic — carnival lights, fried food and the sound of kids having the time of their lives.Volunteers, Smiles and a Whole Lot of HeartBehind every game booth, every grill and every ticket stand stood a volunteer — and by all appearances, they would not have had it any other way. Smiles were everywhere. Burgers were flipped. Beanbags and basketballs were handed out with enthusiasm. The energy behind the scenes matched the excitement on the grounds.Father Francisco and Bishop Elias Lorenzo were very much part of the evening, taking advantage of new indoor seating in the gymnasium while making sure to step out and greet the children and families who stopped in to browse the bazaar and check out the raffle offerings. The fair's success is no accident. It is the product of countless hours of planning and the kind of community commitment that does not show up on a program or a flyer. You Can't Leave Without the ZeppolesNo visit to the OLP Fair is complete without one thing — a warm bag of zeppoles. It is the unwritten rule of the OLP Fair, and nobody is complaining.TAPinto New Providence will have a special feature spotlighting the volunteers behind the scenes who make the OLP Fair the beloved community event it has become. Check back for that story in the coming days.
