Girls Track: Westfield Sets Personal Records at Union County Championships

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ — The Westfield girls track team set individual personal records at the Union County Championships at Governor Livingston High School April 30-May 1.Team-wise, the Blue Devils finished third in the Watchung Division with 69 points. Union Catholic won the division with 224 points, while Cranford was runner-up with 102.5 points.Here are the key performances:Sophomore Kate Tierney (13.04) finished sixth in the 100-yard dash.In the 1,600 meters, sophomore Natalie Salzano (5:27.20) and junior Anna Youssef (5:27.81) finished sixth and seventh respectively.In the 400-meter Watchung Division run, sophomore Lidia Wright (59.05) placed fourth, while junior Scarlett Goldman (60.00) finished sixth. Wright also finished third (15.25) in the 100-meter hurdles. In the high jump, Wright took the top spot (5-2). Senior Claire Sewald (2:25.63) finished ninth in the 800-meter run.Three runners finished within the top 10 in the 3200-meter run, highlighted by a first-place performance by sophomore Audrey Sewald (12:02.23). Senior Vanessa Larkin placed third (12:11.42) and junior Violet Hughes (13:07.98) placed eighth.Junior Scarlett Goldman (26.48) finished fifth in the 200-meter dash final. The Blue Devils finished fourth (4:19.96) in the 4x400 meter relay.In the shot put, freshman Nevaeh McKenith (28-11.50) finished fourth, while junior Marisa Villere-Reidy (26-8.50) placed seventh. McKenith also finished fifth (88-1) in the discus throw and Villere-Reidy (78-10) finished 10th.McKenith placed third (94-6) in the javelin throw and freshman Frederique Daneault (88-10) placed seventh.In the long jump, senior Maya Nair (14-5) placed ninth, senior Audrina Cohall finished 10th (14-2.75), and freshman Allison McMullen (14-2.25) finished 11th.In the triple jump, senior Audrina Cohall (31-2.50) finished in the top five placing fourth, freshman Chloe Pfeifer (28-4) placed ninth, and freshman Alyssa Starobinsky (25-9.50) finished 11th.In the pole vault, sophomore Bridget Garrett (8-0) finished third, while sophomore Cadie Stanek (7-0) placed fourth.“We had a bunch of strong performances across event areas,” said Westfield girls co-head coach Erik Anderson. “McKenith medaled in the shot put, discus and javelin, with huge personal records in the latter two. Wright jumped a season’s best of 5’2” to win the high jump and ran a 400m PR. Goldman shaved almost a second off her 200m and three seconds off her 400m time. Tierney ran a 100m personal best. Sewald knocked 30 seconds off of her 3200m best. Stevens ran a three second 800m personal best. Daneault threw a 7-foot PR in the javelin.”They are a young team that's coming into their own competitively, Anderson said. “They all set themselves up to be in heats and flights where they can score at the county and state sectional championship meets in the coming weeks,” he added.
