Gov. Livingston Baseball Rolls Through Season, Eyes Deep Union County Tournament Run

Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. — The Governor Livingston baseball team has been one of the most dominant programs in Union County this spring, rolling to an 18-3 record and a 9-1 mark in the UCC Watchung Division heading into the quarterfinal round of the Union County Tournament.Dominant From the StartThe Highlanders wasted no time establishing themselves as a force, opening the season with a 6-2 win over New Providence before outscoring Oratory 22-1 across back-to-back games. The run-rule victories kept coming — a 16-1 demolition of Lyndhurst, a 12-3 win over Scotch Plains-Fanwood, an 8-0 shutout of Elizabeth, and a 12-1 road win at Westfield in May all signaled a team with an elite offense and a pitching staff to match. The Highlanders did show they can grind out close games when needed. A 9-8 win over Scotch Plains-Fanwood, a 4-2 road win at Summit, a 7-1 victory over Westfield and an 8-7 win over North Pocono demonstrated composure in tight situations.Their three losses — 2-1 to Johnson, 6-5 at Cranford and 8-7 to Gloucester Catholic in the Autism Awareness Challenge — all came by a single run, a testament to how competitive the schedule has been even in defeat.Tournament StatementThe Highlanders arrived at Snyder Park Saturday morning and left little doubt, opening the Union County Tournament with a 21-0 run-rule rout of Linden in five innings — the most lopsided margin of a season already full of dominant performances.Addison Adornato led the offensive explosion, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two stolen bases. Zach Geertsma went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs, while Owen Keough scored three runs and drove in two on a 2-for-4 afternoon with a pair of doubles. Dominic Labisi added two hits and three RBIs, Ryan Pappas went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Michael Basile contributed two hits and an RBI. The Highlanders collected 18 hits as a team, drew eight walks, and sent 13 runs across in the first inning alone — a tone-setting burst that left little doubt. On the mound, Aidan Feldman was equally sharp, throwing three perfect innings with five strikeouts on just 43 pitches. Jaiden Fernandez closed it out with two scoreless frames, and the duo combined to hold Linden hitless on the afternoon. The performance sent a clear message to the rest of the bracket: the Highlanders are playing their best baseball at the right time. The Road AheadGov. Livingston faces Summit in the quarterfinal round of the Union County Tournament Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. The Highlanders defeated Summit twice during the regular season, 4-2 on the road and 8-1 at home, giving them a decided edge in familiarity heading into the bracket matchup. The Highlanders also have regular-season games remaining against Union Catholic, hosting Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. before traveling Thursday at 4 p.m. The Highlanders then return home to face Bridgewater-Raritan on May 20 at 4 p.m., before closing out the regular season against Hudson Catholic on May 21 at 6 p.m. at Somerset Patriot's Stadium.
