
He Smashed, He Stole — He Didn’t Get Far: Summit Police Make Arrest In Bike Theft

SUMMIT, NJ — “Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?” wasn’t just a TV refrain — it played out in real life on Springfield Avenue as a thief smashed through glass in the dead of night, grabbed a $5,000 e-bike, and sped off into the dark, only to be tracked down and arrested hours later by Summit police.Police say the break-in happened Friday, May 1, at approximately 3:04 a.m., when officers responded to a triggered burglar alarm at a business in the 300 block of Springfield Avenue. When they arrived, the front door was ajar, glass shattered across the ground, and the alarm blaring into the early morning quiet.What initially looked like a clean getaway quickly turned into a tightly wound investigation.Surveillance footage, obtained on scene, showed the suspect casing the store more than 30 minutes earlier — at approximately 2:32 a.m. — peering inside before riding off on a black Trek e-bike that had previously been reported stolen out of Pennsylvania.Roughly 25 minutes later, the suspect returned.This time, police say, he came prepared.At 2:58 a.m., the man smashed the glass front door with a sledgehammer, stepped inside, and in less than a minute grabbed a light blue Specialized Vado 5.0 e-bike valued at $4,999.99 before fleeing toward Springfield Avenue.By then, the clock was ticking — and detectives were already moving.Members of the Summit Police Department’s Detective Bureau launched what officials described as a “multi-layered investigation,” working through the night and into the next day. Detectives canvassed surveillance footage, tracked leads across jurisdictions, and gathered physical evidence, including links stretching into Pennsylvania.Less than 27 hours later, the search ended.On Saturday, May 2, at approximately 6:22 a.m., police arrested Joseph Holman, 46, of Philadelphia. Authorities said Holman resisted officers during the arrest and was found to have two active NCIC warrants, including one for escape from custody.Holman now faces a wide range of charges, including burglary, theft, possession of burglar tools, resisting arrest, and multiple weapons offenses, according to police.He was transported to the Essex County Jail, where he remains pending a detention hearing.“The arrest of this suspect reflects the exceptional commitment, professionalism, and teamwork demonstrated by our officers,” Summit Police Chief Ryan Peters said in a statement. “Their persistence, combined with the coordinated support of our Patrol Bureau, exemplifies the level of dedication and resolve our community relies upon.”The case marks a swift turnaround from what could have been another unsolved overnight burglary — instead becoming a reminder that even in the quiet hours before dawn, investigators are working behind the scenes to close the loop.Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Summit Police Department Detective Bureau at (908) 273-0051.All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
