Leading the State: Berkeley Heights Pilots New Movement for Moms Helping Moms
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Berkeley Heights is officially making history as the first town in New Jersey to pilot the Moms Brigade on behalf of Moms Helping Moms (MHM). This local initiative empowers a dedicated team of residents to act as ambassadors, organizers, and changemakers for a statewide movement that ensures every baby has a safe, healthy start. Introducing a Movement for Local FamiliesWhile many in our community may be learning about Moms Helping Moms for the first time, their impact is significant—serving over 200,000 individuals and distributing 2.6 million items annually. The Moms Brigade is a town-based group designed to bring that mission directly to our doorstep. As the inaugural pilot town in New Jersey, Berkeley Heights is serving as the boots on the ground to: Raise Awareness: 1 in 2 U.S. families struggle to afford diapers —a basic health necessity that is not covered by SNAP or WIC. Closer to home, nearly 16K children ages 3 and younger live in households in Union County that struggle to afford diapers.Organize Action: Lead community drives for essential items like diapers, period products, clothing, and formula.Build Partnerships: Connect MHM with local schools, businesses, and faith communities to create a sustainable support network. Nahela Hadi, Executive Director of Moms Helping Moms, stated, “We are incredibly excited to launch the Berkeley Heights Moms Brigade and to see this community come together in such a powerful way. We know that when neighbors show up for one another to meet basic needs—like diapers, clothing, and hygiene products—we’re not just supporting families, we’re strengthening the entire community. That’s why this pilot is such a meaningful opportunity for Berkeley Heights to lead with compassion and action—and to serve as a powerful model for what a Moms Brigade can achieve in communities everywhere.” This pilot will only succeed with the strength of this community behind it.
