New Providence Boys Lacrosse Hits Midseason Stride With 8-4 Record, Eyes Union County Tournament Run

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — It has been a season of milestones in New Providence — 100 goals for AJ Whitehead, who now sits at 128 for his career, 105 goals for Ryan Knight, and 468 saves for goalkeeper Drew Gullo — and the Pioneers are hitting their stride at exactly the right time. The New Providence boys lacrosse team enters the Union County Tournament Monday evening at 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the Bianchi Division, carrying momentum and a sense that their best lacrosse is still ahead of them. Standing between them and a deep tournament run is a familiar opponent — Johnson, who comes in at 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the Kimber Division — a team the Pioneers already handled 15-11 in the regular season. But first, a moment worth savoring.Knight Reaches 100Senior captain Ryan Knight etched his name into program history during that win over Johnson, scoring six goals to reach the 100-goal milestone for his career. Characteristically, he barely noticed."I don't tend to focus on that stuff that much and was more concerned about the team winning," Knight said. "I didn't remember until after the game that I reached the milestone."That kind of quiet focus is exactly what head coach Russ Anderson had in mind when he called Knight one of the program's all-time greats."Ryan is up there for me as one of the program's most impactful, meaningful leaders and performers," Anderson said. "His attitude and toughness are everything a coach looks for in a player. He put up six goals in that win over Johnson to hit the 100-goal milestone, and I couldn't be happier for him. He has worked for every bit of it and truly deserves that moment."For Knight, the number represents something bigger than a personal achievement."It is a reflection of the awesome opportunities Coach Anderson has given me the past four years, having great teammates, and the tens of thousands of shots I have taken in my backyard," he said. His approach on game nights hasn't changed. "My mentality going into every game is 'all gas, no brakes,'" Knight said. "I was able to get off to a hot start with the first couple goals, which opened up more opportunities for my teammates. The total ended up sneaking up on me because the only thing I am concerned about is scoring enough to win the game."As a senior captain, Knight said his role extends well beyond the stat sheet. "I feel obligated to lead by example and give it my absolute all every game. I try to be a gritty player and I care just as much about plays in the middle of the field or on defense as I do on offense."Weapons EverywhereKnight was quick to spread the credit. He pointed to goalkeeper Drew Gullo for anchoring the back end with 468 saves on the season. “Aside from Drew Gullo locking it down in net we've had underclassmen Luke “LG” Gryzb and Aidan Grizz stepping up huge on defense, Chuck Zarinko and DTroy sniping on the offensive end, and most importantly, CFO Joe Ping and Joe Larubbio always bring the juice and know how to get the boys going. Bobby D has also been huge at the faceoff X and makes a big difference in the game,” he said.Anderson echoed that depth, highlighting AJ Whitehead — who reached the 100-goal milestone earlier this season and now carries 128 career goals into the postseason — as another cornerstone of the offense. Whitehead battled back from a significant football injury this fall to return to the field this spring."AJ is an incredible kid who was dealt a devastating blow this fall with a tough football injury," Anderson said. "I am beyond happy to see him back out there competing because he is critical to our success. It's a testament to his character to come back from that and continue to be one of the prominent attackmen in our loaded conference."Anderson also praised Jack Fitzgerald, who has evolved into a two-way force for New Providence. "He's been a contributor since his freshman year, but in the past two years, he has really come on as both an offensive weapon and a stellar defenseman," Anderson said. "His physical tools make him a nightmare for anyone guarding him." Fitzgerald enters the postseason with 115 career points.Resilience Tested, Resilience ProvenThe Pioneers didn't get here without a bump or two. A one-goal loss to Livingston stung — but Anderson said the response told him everything he needed to know about this group."The one-point loss to Livingston was a heartbreaker, but the way we handled it shows the resilience and accountability of this group," he said. "We knew we didn't play our best against a tough Livingston team, but we didn't let it linger. We turned the page, refocused, and the 15-11 win over Johnson was a direct result of that character."Family AffairKnight's milestone comes with an added dimension — his sophomore sister Libby is already making her own mark in the New Providence program."Libby's a beast," Knight said. "I'm proud of her and glad we got to be at NPHS together. We definitely push each other to be better and she always keeps family games interesting." He added that youngest sister Bridget is already showing promise. "She's going to be a menace in the future."Looking AheadWith the Union County Tournament on deck and a date with Johnson looming, Anderson isn't shying away from the challenge."I firmly believe our best lacrosse is still ahead of us," he said. "We know we have a tough road in front of us, but if the lessons of this season have taught us anything, it's how to be resilient. We're looking forward to taking that mindset into the postseason and making a run in one of the toughest sections in the state."Beating state-ranked Madison 5-4 in overtime has a way of changing the conversation. At 8-4, the Pioneers aren't just competing anymore — they're believing. Now they have to prove it.
