ROSELLE, NJ — Roselle Public Schools is officially introducing a new district initiative that’s designed to prepare students for success in college, careers and life.Titled ‘The Portrait of a Graduate’, the forward-thinking framework is an effort that aligns with the district’s Vision 2027 plan.“Education today must go beyond traditional measures of success,” Board President Dr. Courtney Washington said. “Through Vision 2027 and the ‘Portrait of a Graduate’, we are creating a clear roadmap to ensure every student develops the skills and mindset needed to lead, adapt and contribute in a global society.”According to a press release based on the district’s guiding principle, ‘First in Light, First in Education’, the idea for ‘The Portrait of a Graduate’ establishes a shared vision for student success by six core competencies: Adaptability: Empowering students to adjust to new situations, embrace change, and remain resilientCollaboration: Encouraging students to work and value diverse perspectivesCommunication: Enhancing students’ ability to express ideas while actively listening and understanding others clearlyCritical Thinking: Promoting analysis, inquiry, and thoughtful decision-makingFinancial Literacy: Building practical knowledge of earning, saving, spending, and planning for the futureProblem-Solving: Inspiring perseverance and innovative thinking to overcome challengesThe district believes that by integrating these competencies into the curriculum, instruction and student experiences, they advance their 2027 Vision commitment to innovation, equity and student-centered learning.“These competencies represent more than academic achievement; they reflect the essential skills our students need to succeed in college, careers and life,” Superintendent Dr. Nathan L. Fisher stated. “Aligned with Vision 2027, our ‘Portrait of a Graduate’ ensures we are preparing our students not just for today, but for opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.”Fisher publicly discussed the initiative in the last Board of Education meeting after the district held its hearing on the 2026-2027 Budget. The initiative was developed in partnership with the AASA (The School Superintendent Association) under the leadership of Title I Supervisor William ‘Bill’ Jones and Kindergarten Success Academy Principal Lauren Gonzalez.Stakeholders and Roselle families will continue to play an important role in supporting the district’s new vision as ‘The Portrait of a Graduate’ is set to serve as a cornerstone for their strategic efforts, guiding instructional practices, student goal-setting and community partnerships. The community can get more information about the new initiative on the district's website and follow their social media platforms for updates.
