KENILWORTH, NJ - In observance of Arbor Day, the Union County Board of County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Union County Shade Tree Advisory Board, invited students in grades fourth through eighth to enter a Poet-Tree contest. The annual contest aims to inspire students to encourage environmental responsibility, advocate for tree conservation and reflect on the beauty of trees through the art of poetry. Saint Theresa's sixth graders were up for the challenge and each wrote a poem. The requirements of the poem were limited to a seven stanza, focusing on the benefits, beauty and contributions of trees to our communities. While all students’ poems were wonderfully written, Lucas Lopina’s poem “Always a Giver” took second place. Lucas was then recognized at an awards ceremony at the Union County Administrative Building on April 30.Arbor Day, which is observed on the last Friday in April, originated in Nebraska in 1872 and has since grown into a nationwide movement to encourage tree planting and environmental awareness.Congratulations Lucas!
