Softball: Brearley Shocks No. 3 Summit in Statement Win as Beronio, Pirozzi, Zawacki Shine
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
KENILWORTH, NJ - On Tuesday, May 5, a day that few outside their dugout believed was possible, the Brearley Varsity Softball team delivered a performance built on grit, execution, and belief, took down Summit in a dramatic, low-scoring battle that sent shockwaves through New Jersey softball.Coming into the matchup, Summit had firmly established itself as one of the elite teams in the state, carrying a No. 3 ranking and a reputation for dominant pitching and explosive offense.Gia Pirozzi led the charge in the circle, delivering a dominant shutout performance. She struck out 11 batters against one of the state’s most dangerous lineups. With that performance, Pirozzi raised her season total to 122 strikeouts in 85 innings pitched, further cementing her status as one of the state's top arms.Amber Zawacki made her presence felt in a big way. She reached base three times, drawing two walks and collecting one of Brearley’s two hits on the day. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Zawacki showed excellent awareness and speed. After getting on base, she came all the way around to score from first on a clutch single by Rian Beronio. That run proved to be the difference in the game. The victory not only avenged an earlier 4–2 loss to Summit on April 16th, but also extended Brearley’s current winning streak to seven games. Since that defeat, the Bears have found their rhythm, stringing together strong performances and building confidence at the perfect time in the season. The Bears will look to continue their success on Saturday, May 9, as they host The Pioneers from New Providence in the first round of the Union County Tournament at Home.Go Bears!Related Articles:Brearley Softball: Kenilworth's Bears Continue Huge Winning StreakKenilworth's Gia Pirozzi Reaches 300 Career Strikeouts MilestoneVictory for Brearley Girls Softball on Opening Day; Gia Pirozzi Earns 200th Career Strikeout Have a news tip, feedback or story idea?
