SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Springfield’s long‑planned shared salt dome facility with Millburn is officially underway, with surveying and site preparation now in progress. Springfield administrator John Bussiculo updated the Township Committee on April 28, explaining that the project has moved into its first active phase.“We started working on the salt dome,” Bussiculo said. “We’ve got GPI… they’re going to do all of the surveying and put the pins in so we know where everything is. Then the next step is we’ll start clearing the property.”According to Bussiculo, a key benefit of the project is Springfield’s cost‑sharing agreement with Millburn. “Millburn is in to split this with us 50/50,” he said. “So I think that’s going to be a tremendous help for us in the wintertime.”The shared dome is expected to improve storage capacity, reduce winter operational costs and ensure more reliable salt availability during storms.
