
Springfield Awarded $70K for Irwin Park Tennis Court Improvements

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Adam Lieb, director of the Springfield Recreation Department, reported on the status of pool readiness, playground improvements and summer programs during the April 28 Township Committee meeting.Lieb announced that Springfield has been awarded almost $70,000 in state funding for the reconstruction of the Irwin Park tennis courts, which will be resurfaced and striped for both tennis and pickleball. The project is targeted for completion in spring 2027.The community pool opens at the end of this month, with the Department of Public Works, Recreation Department and the YMCA coordinating daily preparations. The baby pool has been fully repainted and re-tiled, and the main pool is scheduled for cleaning and refilling next week. The YMCA has begun installing a new mini‑golf course in the former bocce area.The township recently opened the Henshaw Park playground, funded jointly by the township and Union County’s Kids Recreation Trust Fund. The redesigned space features new slides, climbing structures, shade elements, and updated safety surfacing.Summer programming includes 10 weeks of camp, supported by four private partners offering science, Lego, Pokémon, and sports sessions. Senior services continue to expand, with multiple bus trips scheduled and a June senior event in planning.
