Swings, Sensory Stations and Shade: Oakwood Park's New Inclusive Playground Breaks Ground in July

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The long-awaited Oakwood Park Playground renovation project is breaking ground this July.The new inclusive playground will feature fun recreational play equipment that can be accessed by all children and adults. In addition to many of the common playground staples like slides, imaginary play spaces, and spinning attractions, the new Oakwood Park playground will also include sensory activities, quiet spots, wheelchair access to rides, and revised surfacing to make the park accessible for all.The overall project includes the new inclusive playground with rubber surfacing, pathway from the parking spaces to the bathrooms, shade canopies, picnic tables, fencing, and updated bathrooms.Oakwood Park is the most well-used park facility in New Providence. Residents come to recreate on the muti-purpose turf field and baseball diamonds, play on the playground, and relax in the picnic pavilion. Community members of all ages and abilities utilize the park and enjoy its features. The new playground will enhance that experience for all.The Borough of New Providence applied for and was awarded grant funding from the State of New Jersey Jake’s Law Playground Grant, NJ Local Recreation Improvement Grant, and the Union County Kids Recreation Trust Fund Grant- for a total of $874,000 in grant funding.Any questions about the project can be directed to Allison Smith, Director of Recreation and Community Activities (908)464-4430, asmith@newprov.us
