Young Anglers Cast Their Lines at New Providence Fishing Derby
Union County Life News Desk · Union County Life
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — The early bird catches the fish — or at least that was the plan Saturday morning in New Providence.Under a cool, grey sky that felt more like a fisherman's good omen than a deterrent, young anglers and their families turned out for the annual New Providence Fishing Derby at Oakwood Park pond, co-hosted by the New Providence PBA and Recreation Department. The derby kicked off at 8 a.m., but the excitement arrived well ahead of schedule — some kids were already at the water's edge before 7, eager to be first to cast a line and claim the early prizes. The organizers made sure no one fished on an empty stomach, with coffee and Munchkins on hand — an appreciated touch that kept the morning social and warm despite the overcast chill. The pond had been freshly stocked with bluegill and larger, prize-worthy catches. The bigger fish, organizers noted, were the ones worth bragging about. The stockings were described as especially well-suited for pond fishing, with few if any casualties expected from fish stocked the day prior.Among the crowd were apparent first-timers, wide-eyed and gripping their poles with equal parts determination and uncertainty, alongside young veterans who moved with the quiet confidence of kids who'd done this before. At the time TAPinto arrived mid-event, just one fish had been reeled in — and it came within the first five minutes. Anthony Baczkowski wasted no time, landing the first catch of the day and taking home a $200 gift card for his efforts. Whether his early strike was the day's highlight or just the opening act of a banner morning, only the anglers still on the bank would know for sure.
