Summit Council President Toth Issues Q2 2026 Update

Housing compliance carried into the second quarter

The affordable housing work that dominated the first quarter continued through spring. The 2025 council had reached a court-ordered settlement establishing what Summit must build by June 30, 2035. The 2026 council passed the ordinances and resolutions needed to implement that plan. The Common Council also voted at its April 21 meeting to establish a Round IV Common Council Task Force to guide the next phase of compliance work.

Chestnut Parking Lot reopens downtown

The Common Council voted at its June 16 meeting to reopen the Chestnut Parking Lot at the corner of Broad Street and Morris Avenue for permit parking, effective June 17, 2026. Council President Toth noted that summer repair work will close the upper tiers of the Tiered Garage and that the Chestnut lot reopening will relieve some of the resulting pressure on downtown parking.

Council advances land use ordinances

The June 16 meeting also included votes on ordinances that would add AI data center facilities and detention centers to the list of prohibited uses in Summit. Both measures amend the city's existing development regulations.

Playground projects move forward

Work is underway at Mabie and Tatlock playgrounds. New projects and upgrades are also planned at the Community Center and Memorial Field. The Junior League of Summit donated $46,000 toward the Mabie Playground project.
