New Providence July 3 Block Party Brings Fireworks, Free Cake, and a Food Network Baker
South Street in New Providence will transform into a full block party on the evening of July 3, and this year the tradition includes something new: a 400-pound birthday cake made by a local baker who has beaten the best on national television.
The Borough of New Providence and the New Providence Business Community are hosting their annual Downtown Fireworks celebration on Friday, July 3, starting at 7 p.m. on South Street, from Gales Drive to Springfield Avenue. Union County Life will have coverage of the event. Fireworks are scheduled to launch around 9:15 p.m. and should be visible from most spots across the borough.
A 400-Pound Cake for America's 250th
Joe Murphy, owner of Bakehouse in New Providence, is baking the centerpiece dessert. Murphy is a two-time Food Network winner, having taken top honors on both Chopped Sweets and Beat Bobby Flay. The sheet cake weighs in at 400 pounds and is baked in honor of America's 250th birthday. At 7 p.m., the cake makes its way to the festival area, the crowd sings, and then it gets sliced and served to whoever is there.
What South Street Looks Like That Night
A DJ will be running a dance party along the street throughout the evening. Sidewalk chalk, giveaways, and other surprises are planned. Borough organizers encourage residents to grab dinner at a downtown restaurant before the festivities get going, then find a viewing spot before the fireworks go up.
The launch site, as in past years, is NP Fuel. The celebration is free and open to the public.
