Elizabeth High School Teacher Earns Ivy League Consortium Recognition

Elizabeth Teacher Nicole Marcianti Wins Ivy League Honor

Nicole Marcianti has spent years leading students at Elizabeth High School–Frank J. Cicarell Academy through gothic novels and horror films, asking them to notice how fear on the page often mirrors fear at home. This spring, that scholarship earned her a national honor of her own.

Marcianti, an English teacher, has been selected to receive the 2026 Chapter Advisor Distinguished Lecturer Award, presented by the National English Honor Society (NEHS) Advisory Council and the Ivy League Consortium. Union County Life reviewed the announcement, which recognizes both Marcianti's individual scholarship and, according to district officials, the caliber of educators teaching throughout Elizabeth Public Schools.

A Lecture Built Around Fear and the Home

The award recognized a specific piece of work: Marcianti's scholarly presentation, "Domestic Spaces as Psychological Prisons: The Evolution of Female Entrapment from 18th Century Gothic to Modern Horror." In a letter announcing the honor, NEHS Director Christopher Lockwood praised the strength of her research, telling Marcianti that her lecture was of extremely high quality and that the evaluators who reviewed it commended it highly.

What the Recognition Means Going Forward

The award comes with more than a certificate. This summer, Marcianti will submit her lecture abstract along with a recorded presentation for inclusion in the Ivy League Consortium's program. She has also been invited to take part in future seminars, discussions, and interactive presentations alongside Ivy League faculty and students.

Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Olga Hugelmeyer connected the honor to the district's broader goals. "Our commitment to meeting our goals of academic excellence and higher education readiness is realized through the dedicated service of our team members inside the classroom who make measurable contributions to student success," Hugelmeyer said. "Nicole Marcianti has maintained an incredible standard of excellence while helping our students in their academic pursuits."

A Classroom Win, Too

For Marcianti's students, the recognition is a reminder that the ideas discussed in an Elizabeth classroom can hold up against a national academic audience. A teacher who has them closely reading horror fiction on a Tuesday afternoon is, by summer, presenting that same scholarship to Ivy League faculty.
