Patricia Chen · Union County Life

The Mountainside 7U Huskies captured their second consecutive District 12 championship Wednesday night, rallying past Cranford 16-14 in a dramatic comeback at Coffee Field.

The Huskies faced an early test but found their rhythm. Mountainside built a 7-1 lead, but Cranford battled back and eventually moved ahead 14-9. In the fifth inning, the momentum shifted. Hudson Klippel stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered a three-run double that tied the score.

The Huskies completed their comeback in the top of the sixth and final inning. Ryan Delzotti and Brody Atkins each recorded RBI hits to give Mountainside a 16-14 lead. Cranford threatened in the bottom of the inning with runners on first and second, but Lucas Castaldo recorded two crucial outs before the final Cranford batter struck out, sealing the championship.

The championship run was built on solid tournament play. The Huskies won pool play matchups against Watchung Hills and Summit before facing Cranford in an earlier contest. They defeated Berkeley Heights 11-7 in the semifinals before earning another opportunity against Cranford in the title game.

The championship roster includes Christopher Manna, Hudson Klippel, Matteo Barbera, Cameron Grady, Nolan Shanahan, Lucas Castaldo, George Emerson, Quinn Lazarus, Nathan Faustino, Henry Weber, Brody Atkins, and Ryan Delzotti. The team is coached by Brian Weber, Chris Delzotti, Jason Atkins, Will Klippel, and Chris Manna.
