New Providence Opens Three Cooling Locations as Heat Rises

The Borough of New Providence has designated three cooling locations for residents seeking relief from high temperatures, the borough announced June 30. Union County Life is tracking the designations as conditions develop.

The New Providence Memorial Library at 377 Elkwood Avenue is open as a cooling location Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The DeCorso Community Center at 15 East Fourth Street is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Municipal Center lobby at 360 Elkwood Avenue is open Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Borough officials are urging residents to take precautions during the heat. Recommendations include drinking plenty of water, staying in air conditioned spaces when possible, wearing lightweight and light colored clothing, and limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

The borough is also asking residents to check on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, and to make sure pets have access to shade and fresh water.
