Rahway's Revolutionary War History to Explore This July

Maria Torres · Union County Life

RAHWAY, NJ — Every July, neighbors across Rahway find a reason to slow down and look at their own streets a little differently. Beneath the everyday routines of this Union County city lies a direct connection to the founding of the nation.

Union County Life is highlighting that connection ahead of Independence Day, with a focus on Rahway Cemetery, one of the most significant Revolutionary War era sites in the region.

Rahway Cemetery, located on St. Georges Avenue, is the final resting place of Abraham Clark, one of five New Jersey signers of the Declaration of Independence. Clark, born in nearby Roselle, served in the Continental Congress and later represented New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives. Clark Township was named in his honor.

A large gravestone marks the burial site of Clark and his wife, Sarah. The cemetery is also the resting place of over 50 Revolutionary War veterans, including three of the Clarks' own sons, who served in New Jersey militia units during the war.

Residents who want to dig deeper into this history have a resource close at hand. RevolutionaryWarNewJersey.com, created by historian Al Frazza, catalogs photos and details for 650 Revolutionary War historic sites across all 21 New Jersey counties, including multiple locations in Rahway and throughout Union County.

Frazza has also released a coffee table book, "The Past Still Present: Revolutionary War New Jersey in Photos," featuring images of statues, monuments, historic houses, and cemeteries connected to the Revolutionary War era. TAPinto Rahway contributor David Brighouse reviewed the book, calling it an engaging blend of memoir, travelogue, and history lesson.

For families looking for a hands on way to mark Independence Day, a short visit to Rahway Cemetery offers a tangible link to the people who shaped the country's founding, right in their own neighborhood.
