Donna Eleazer didn't know the surprise was coming.
She had spent the evening welcoming members, scholarship recipients, community honorees, sponsors, and families to the Rotary Club of Roselle/Roselle Park's annual Community Excellence Awards and Scholarship Banquet on May 20 in Union. She had opened with words about service and leadership and the students the club had gathered to celebrate.
Then Club Secretary Bob Zeglarski stepped forward — and the night took a turn she didn't see coming.
Zeglarski presented Eleazer with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition, one of Rotary International's highest honors, in front of the room she had spent three years leading. Union County Life is glad to share the moment with the broader Roselle and Roselle Park community.
"Aside from guiding the club for three consecutive years, she ensured that our club donated $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation during the 2025 Rotary year, so Rotarians can do good all around the world," Zeglarski said.
Eleazer served as president of the Rotary Club of Roselle/Roselle Park for three consecutive years, leading the club through its ongoing work across both communities. The recognition reflected not just the length of her tenure but the consistency of it — the kind of leadership that keeps a volunteer organization moving forward year after year.
She had set the tone for the evening before anyone knew what was coming.
"Tonight, we come together to celebrate the spirit of service, leadership, and academic achievement that strengthens our community and inspires hope for the future," Eleazer said as she opened the banquet. "This special occasion allows us to recognize outstanding individuals and students whose dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence truly reflect the values we hold dear as Rotarians."
The banquet honored more than its president. Four local organizations received Community Excellence Awards. Five graduating students were each awarded $1,000 scholarships.
