Westfield Art and America 250 Events — July 2026

Westfield neighbors gathered downtown on Monday for a ribbon cutting celebrating new artwork marking the town's own history, just days before the nation's 250th birthday.

Union County Life was on hand as town council members joined representatives from the Westfield Public Arts Commission and the Downtown Westfield Corporation to unveil the piece, painted onto a utility box at 201 East Broad Street.

The mural traces Westfield's roots from its 1720 origins through eras of growth and shared community, with scenes showing early homesteads alongside recent streetscapes and a list of notable Westfield residents.

The artwork was painted by Dea Lenihan, an artist and illustrator who has lived in Westfield for 25 years.

"Westfield asked me to paint a utility box for America's 250th," Lenihan said. "I feel patriotic, proud and honored to be chosen."

Westfield Public Arts Commission member Rachel Eckerling said the piece is meant to spark conversation among neighbors.

"The Public Arts Commission's goal is to enhance the town and engage the population," Eckerling said.

Mayor Jeremy Berman thanked the commission for bringing the mural to life.

"I'm grateful for the commission's ongoing efforts to enhance our public spaces and enrich our community through the arts," he said.

Daniel Taugher, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation, said several upcoming downtown events will also tie into the America 250 celebrations.

On July 1, a World Cup watch party will bring soccer fans together on Quimby Street, with festivities starting at 7 p.m. and kickoff at 8 p.m.

The Westfield Community Band will hold its annual Independence Day Concert on July 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Mindowaskin Park, featuring music that celebrates American composers.

On July 4 at 10:30 a.m., the Westfield Historical Society will host patriotic readings at Mindowaskin Park, including the Declaration of Independence, the original Bill of Rights, and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.

A George Washington impersonator will visit the Town Book Store on July 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. for an interactive program for children and families.
