ALJ High School Crusader Football Team Visits First Children School
Maria Torres · Union County Life
Members of the Arthur L. Johnson High School Crusader Football Team stepped into the classrooms of First Children School in Plainfield this month to spend time with students receiving specialized educational services.
The visit reflected what community journalism at Union County Life tracks regularly: the ways young athletes connect with the broader community beyond the field. First Children School serves students with complex educational needs, pairing classroom instruction with therapy and support services that extend into students' home districts. The school partners with regional organizations including Children's Specialized Hospital and Eden Autism Services.
During their visit, the Crusader football players moved through various classrooms, participating in curriculum-related activities alongside the students. The interaction was mutual—players and children worked together, asked questions, and engaged with the routines that make up a school day at First Children.
"The football program was thrilled to be able to assist with the daily routines and to participate in activities held at the First Children School," said Head Coach Mike Ryan. "It was watching our Crusader student athletes as they interacted with the children. I think both groups not only enjoyed the experience, but learned a lot while doing it."
The First Children School staff welcomed the team and thanked the players for their participation. For the Crusaders, the visit represented a chance to see how community service works in practice—and for the children at First Children, it meant a day of new faces and fresh energy in their classrooms.
