Summit PAL Names Chuck Salzman 2026 Citizen of the Year

Maria Torres · Union County Life

The Summit Police Athletic League has named Chuck Salzman, President and Owner of Peerless Beverage Company, as its 2026 Citizen of the Year. Salzman will be honored at the Summit PAL Golf Classic on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Watchung Valley Golf Club (600 Mountain Blvd., Watchung). The recognition celebrates Salzman's sustained commitment to community service, charitable giving, and leadership supporting Summit's youth and nonprofit organizations.

Salzman has spent his entire life in the Union County region—growing up in Westfield and living in Summit for 17 years with his wife Jen. The couple has three children: daughter Penelope (rising Summit High School junior), son Teddy (entering seventh grade at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School), and son Joe (entering fourth grade at Winston School in Short Hills). Deep community roots and family connection to Summit reflect personal investment in community well-being across generations.

Alex Karapetian, President of Summit PAL, described Salzman's impact: "Chuck has become much more than a supporter of Summit PAL. He has become a friend and someone we know we can always count on. What stands out about Chuck is that his commitment to our community is genuine. He doesn't look for recognition; he simply sees an opportunity to make a difference and steps up. He cares deeply about Summit, our kids and the future of our community, and that comes through in everything he does."

Peerless Beverage Company History and Leadership

Salzman's connection to Peerless Beverage spans three generations. His immigrant grandfather founded the company in 1933, starting as a truck driver delivering beer in Newark. His father joined in the 1950s and ran the company for nearly 50 years. Salzman himself joined Peerless in 1998 after graduating from the University of Vermont; he later earned an MBA from Fordham University.

In the mid-1960s, Peerless merged with Crescent Beverage (owned by the Beim family). The two families remain partners today, demonstrating long-term business stability and family commitment to company mission.

Peerless Beverage Operations and Economic Impact

Under Salzman's leadership, Peerless Beverage employs 300 people, represents 70 breweries, wineries, and distilleries, and serves more than 3,000 customers across seven counties in northern New Jersey. The scale of operations demonstrates significant regional economic presence and employment contribution.

Salzman serves on industry supplier councils for Constellation, MolsonCoors, Diageo, Sierra Nevada, and Heineken—reflecting recognition and leadership within beverage industry.

Community Charitable Giving Philosophy

Peerless operates under the philosophy of "supporting the community that supports us." The company contributes annually to more than 300 local charities. Salzman serves on the board of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, directing personal leadership toward food security and community nutrition access.

Corporate and personal charitable commitment reflects belief that business success generates community responsibility and opportunity for philanthropic reinvestment.

Genuine Community Commitment Without Recognition-Seeking

Salzman has stated he has never sought recognition for community contributions. His involvement with Summit PAL began after Tom Rende reached out to him. Salzman attended the prior year's golf outing (where Coach Davidson was honored) and expressed admiration for Davidson's contribution.

Salzman's surprise and honor at receiving the Citizen of the Year designation reflects authentic community engagement driven by community need rather than personal recognition motivation.

Summit PAL Mission and Youth Programming

Summit PAL is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building positive relationships between local police and Summit youth through athletic, educational, and recreational programs. Police-community partnerships through youth engagement create foundation for lifelong positive civic relationships and community trust.

Salzman's support enables PAL programming that connects law enforcement to young people through shared activities and mentorship.
