Free YMCA Membership Open to 7th Graders in Elizabeth, Union, and Rahway

The Gateway Family YMCA has officially opened registration for its 2026–2027 7th Grade Initiative, offering free memberships to seventh graders across eastern Union County. To take advantage of this community program, students only need to provide proof of their grade level and a guardian's signature.

The complimentary membership is part of the NJ YMCA 7th Grade Initiative, a state-wide strategy aimed at helping teenagers discover and build healthy habits during crucial developmental years.

What the Free Membership Includes

Seventh-grade participants will gain access to a comprehensive suite of fitness, recreational, and educational resources, including:

• Fitness & Athletics: Group exercise classes, strength training, basketball, pickleball, soccer, and swimming.

• Specialized Programs: Esports, STEAM programming, and the virtual YMCA360 platform.

• Community Leadership: Opportunities for mentorship, volunteerism, and youth-led events shaped by student interests and feedback.

Supporting Teens in a Pivotal Year

"7th grade is a pivotal time in youth development, where teens begin to make their own decisions and life choices," said Melynda A. Disla, President and CEO of The Gateway Family YMCA. "We remain committed to support the youth in our community and work together to ensure a bright and well-rounded future."

Susan Butler, Senior Director of Community Wellness, highlighted the importance of keeping teens active during this transitional phase. "Sports become more competitive entering the teen years, and there is a chance of becoming sedentary," Butler explained. "The Y is here to provide activity, socialization, leadership skills, and staff role models to encourage healthy habits to last a lifetime."
