Kenilworth Korean War Veterans Book Research

Michael T. Naya Jr., a Kenilworth high school social studies teacher and lifelong resident historian, is asking his neighbors for help with his latest research project. After a decade researching the borough's World War II generation, work that produced the book "Kenilworth: The War at Home," now available on Amazon, Naya is turning his attention to Korean War veterans.

"I am currently seeking assistance from the Kenilworth community to help identify Korean War veterans and their families so that we can preserve their stories for future generations," Naya said. "This project aims to collect biographical information on veterans in order to compile a book honoring their contributions."

Naya is looking for information on three groups: people born in Kenilworth who later served in the Korean War; people who lived in Kenilworth during or after their Korean War service; and people not born in Kenilworth who resided in the community at the time of their passing. The scope of his previous research gives a sense of the work involved. Since 2016, Naya has interviewed more than 200 World War II veterans, including more than ten from Kenilworth.

Beyond his teaching and historical research, Naya serves as an associate member of the Kenilworth Historical Society, Historian for the USS Yorktown (CV-5) Club, and former Archivist of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. He is also an honorary member of the Kenilworth Rotary Club, the Fifth Marine Division Association, and the 307th Bomb Group Association.
