Latin Jazz Returns to Westfield's GALERIA on Sept. 19

Maria Torres · Union County Life

Barbara Martínez and the Alba Musik group bring their flamenco-rooted sound to GALERIA at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. The concert is part of the returning LATIN JAZZ @ GALERIA series and fuses flamenco with pop, jazz, funk, Latin, and world music.

Martínez comes from a family with deep roots in Latin American arts. Her grandmother is Morenita Rey, a celebrated Argentinian tango singer and actress. Her grand-aunt is Libertad Lamarque. Her father, Rafael Martínez, is a celebrated Venezuelan sculptor connected to the kinetic art movement from Latin America, and her mother, Amelia Arenas, is a playwright and art historian. Martínez herself has worked as an actor, dancer, and choreographer in multimedia musical plays.

Guitarist Albert Alabedra grew up in Barcelona, Spain, and taught himself guitar starting at age 14. His mother is from Córdoba, Spain, and his grandparents are from Sevilla, Andalucía. Joining Martínez and Alabedra are Olyda Ola, a vocalist, flamenco dancer, and percussionist, and Sean Kupiz, a bassist and percussionist.

Both Martínez and Alabedra have studio albums — "Dawn" and "Alma" — that made the first round of GRAMMY nominations. Their musical journey spans continents and generations, bringing contemporary artistry rooted in tradition.

GALERIA also houses The Art Venue gallery, where current fine art exhibitions featuring international and local artists are on view. Refreshments will be available at the event. Fine restaurants are within reach in downtown Westfield before or after the show.

Tickets are $40. Advance tickets are available through Eventbrite. Reservations can also be made by calling the TEATRO Sí box office at (908) 301-9496. Proceeds benefit programming at TEATRO Sí, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
